So what would the fleet SSN be? 1st generation I'd envision more Barracudas, possibly with a hull plug for VLS?

So what would the fleet SSN be? 1st generation I'd envision more Barracudas, possibly with a hull plug for VLS? Really torn on this question. Still to my mind Astute was and is the better option, as is the single use reactor. Refuelling is expensive and dangerous. But that is the model the French have gone for, piggybacking on their civilian nuclear industry. Also torn because the UK did showcase quite an innovative future concept of simpler external form (easier/cheaper to build) with internal pumpjets for low noise and better streamlining. DCN has have had some innovative ideas, but I still think that UK concept is worth pursuing. Ironically the EU would have the potential funds to derisk this with a research/prototype sub.

True, all of this. But I cannot see the UK participating in this. The whole idea of a joint EU military is anathema to it.

OK so it came up first on the successor to the Fifth Column forum, but it's also on the Secret Projects Forum as well as somewhere deeply burried in the WArships1 RN section. Heres a link fo Secret Projects Thread. www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2550.0.html

Thanks, but that link comes out in the forum home? As regards civilian fuel, it has the advantage that you can use it without violating the non-proliferation treaty. That might help for the EU, but also, was I Oz or Canada, I'd be looking that.

If one wanted to draw the UK in, this would be an option to fund a prototype. If I was French, I'd seriously ponder cooperation here.

With the brilliant French track record on cooperation I'd happily have the UK's technology. I just wonder how many bridges are being burnt at the mo

Right now the UK and France are if anything deepening their defence relationship with each other.
